Introduction

Wang Ky Kim is a senior advisor at Yulchon. Before joining Yulchon in March 2014, Mr. Kim played a pivotal role in the arenas of media, administration and finance. He graduated from College of Business & Economics at Korea University in 1979. He started out as a reporter at the Political Desk of the Korea Herald and spent most of his career in media at the JoongAng Daily, covering the areas of economy/finance and industry for nearly three decades. He served as an editorial writer at the JoongAng Daily and went on to become a Director of the English newspaper division to oversee the production and management of the IHT-JoongAng Daily. From 2008 to 2010, he was Assistant Minister for Public Affairs and Spokesperson of the Office of the Prime Minister, serving as a liaison between the administration and the public. In 2010, he was appointed as an executive vice president of KB Financial Group Inc., overseeing the group’s PR, IR, sports marketing, CSR, external businesses, brand/communications and crisis management. He was awarded a National Merit medal from the government in 2013 for spearheading CSR activities such as the ‘KB Good Job,’ a job creation project for young people, and the establishment of KB Financial Group’s public welfare foundation. Mr. Kim did not stop at giving insights and providing relevant alternatives on issues from the areas of economy, politics and society through his articles and columns, but also served as a panel member of the audit based on citizens request at the Board of Audit and Inspection and a member of a deliberation panel for information communication policy at the Ministry of Information and Communication, directly carrying out tasks or providing advice on relief for acute social tensions and crisis management. While he was incumbent at the Office of Prime Minister in 2008, the ‘beef crisis’ created severe social tensions and a national crisis. He engaged in crisis managment as a member of the task force team consisting of high-level officials from political parties, the government and the Blue House, providing a solution to the crisis. While the prime minister was visiting countries overseas, he engaged in summit diplomacy by participating in the UN General Assembly, Davos Forum, OECD board and the activities related to nuclear power plant contracts with the UAE and Turkey, as a part of the government representation. He has been serving as a professor at Korea National Open University since 2003, and published News Reporting and Newswriting, currently used in the classrooms of the Korea National Open University, No Place for Korean Economy and Chronicles of the 6th Republic of Korea’s Economy. He advises in the arenas of banking/finance, M&A, culture/sports, and brand and crisis management.
